Introduction to Dermaplaning

Your skin sheds naturally as your body’s way of replacing old skin cells with new ones, but does so at such a slow pace, most people won’t ever notice. There are times though, in which the cells don’t fully shed which can lead to a dull and flakey appearance, dry patches, and even clogged pores. Exfoliation is becoming a more and more popular cosmetic routine that helps improve your glow and Dermabrasion is at the top of that list. Conveniently located to serve New York City and Long Island, KH Plastic Surgery offers this non-invasive treatment to our patients as a convenient and effective way of obtaining new, fresh skin.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning in New York City is a resurfacing treatment that utilizes physical exfoliation to carefully remove the top layer of skin using a surgical blade revealing fresher smoother skin. This treatment removes dead skin along with vellus hair, which is also called “peach fuzz” or fine light hair. When the hair grows back, it will remain soft and light as it was originally.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

As one of the busiest aesthetic practices in New York City, we’ve had the luxury of witnessing our patients experience exceptional advantages from this treatment. Dermaplaning offers a number of benefits:

  • Dermaplaning increases the absorption of topical products.
  • It diminishes the appearance of acne scarring, dullness, fine lines, and wrinkles.
  • It exfoliates dead skin cells and stimulates cellular turnover.
  • It is a painless procedure.
  • No downtime or recovery time is needed after the treatment session.
  • The procedure can be performed regularly to maintain its results.
  • This treatment is a great add-on to any of our other facial services or great on its own. It can be performed before skin treatments like laser treatments, chemical peels, facials, and microdermabrasion.
  • It is an excellent option for individuals with skin sensitivities or for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Who are the Best Candidates for the Dermaplaning procedure?

The best candidates for Dermaplaning in NYC are ones with realistic expectations for the cosmetic procedure. You may consider Dermaplaning if you have skin concerns such as:

  • Acne scars
  • Dull or dry skin
  • Peach fuzz or light, soft hair on your face
  • Skin damaged by sun exposure
  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Sun patches

What’s the First Step?

The first step in a Dermaplaning treatment is to schedule a consultation with one of our certified Aestheticians, which will take place at our private office. During this appointment, we will discuss the area you are looking to receive Dermaplaning on and answer any questions you may have regarding the treatment.

Once we attain the information needed, your customized procedure plan will be created. If you consent to this plan, we can start Dermaplaning instantly, or if you need more time, you are welcome to speak to our Patient Coordinator, who will help you reschedule a date that is more suitable to your schedule.

Professionals suggest discontinuing the use of all exfoliants at least five days before the dermaplaning procedure. These include BHAs, microbeads, retinoids, and AHAs. The reason behind this is that these products make the skin thinner.

You should also avoid hair-removal techniques like shaving, threading, and waxing a minimum of two weeks before dermaplaning.

What to Expect on the Day of Dermaplaning

At the start of the treatment process, the skin is cleansed, removing excess oil and any products. Because it is a gentle and painless procedure, it requires no anesthesia of any kind.

A sterile scalpel is then used to exfoliate the skin and remove vellus hairs. Typically, regions around the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, and neck are treated. The process is completely non-invasive.

Dermaplaning Recovery

After the treatment, you can immediately return to your everyday schedule. It will be necessary to wear sunscreen for a time afterward to protect the exfoliated skin.
