What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

The Phoenix Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatment can produce dramatic, lasting results in just one treatment. CO2 Laser Resurfacing in New York City diminishes sun spots and age spots, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and can minimize scarring on the face and hands. It also imparts a balanced skin tone and tightened skin.

This facial rejuvenation process works by removing sections of the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. The laser energy also heats the inner layer of the skin (called the dermis).

This encourages the production of collagen, which improves overall skin tone and texture. Collagen is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and structural strength. Leaving untouched sections of the epidermis allows these sections to aid in the healing process for faster recovery. This is the advantage of fractional laser procedures.

The epidermal layer heals and regrows after treatment, which gives the skin a tighter and smoother appearance.

What are the Benefits of CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

Here are just a few of the benefits that our NYC area patients have seen from their CO2 Laser Resurfacing treatments:

  • Can help treat pre-cancerous skin lesions
  • Encourages collagen production for firmer, more youthful skin
  • Improves skin texture and evens skin tone
  • Reduces sun damage, acne scars, and fine lines
  • Very little downtime

Who are the Best Candidates for the CO2 Laser Resurfacing procedure?

Laser skin resurfacing can address a wide range of flaws and imperfections, including:

  • Age spots
  • Dull-looking skin
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Irregular skin texture
  • Sagging
  • Scarring
  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles

Because treatment with CO2 lasers is more aggressive and can sometimes cause hyperpigmentation, we generally do not recommend it for patients with darker skin tones.

We do offer a range of other laser skin treatments, so if this treatment is not right for you, Dr. Hoschander can assess your skin during a consultation and determine what your best options are to meet your needs and goals.

What’s the First Step?

During a consultation at KH Plastic Surgery, expect your doctor to ask questions about your general health, any current medical conditions, and any previous cosmetic treatments. You will also need to tell your doctor about any medications you are taking and any allergies.

Be prepared for a physical examination. The doctor will check your skin to understand factors such as tone, thickness, and scarring tendencies. These factors help the doctor estimate the extent of the results.

You will be asked to avoid smoking and sun exposure in the days leading up to your CO2 laser resurfacing treatment session.

What to Expect on the Day of CO2 Laser Resurfacing

The CO2 Laser Resurfacing procedure can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours. First, you will be given medication to numb the treatment area. In the case of extensive facial resurfacing, sedation may be required.

Your doctor uses a handpiece to target the treatment area with an intense laser beam. This energy removes the epidermis and heats the dermal layer beneath. Once the procedure is complete, your doctor will use a water-resistant and airtight dressing to cover the area.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing Recovery

After CO2 Laser Resurfacing, the treated skin usually becomes itchy, swollen, or sore. You may also be prescribed pain-relieving medications.

It takes 2 to 3 weeks for new skin to form and healing to be complete. Your doctor will advise you to avoid cosmetic products during recovery since they can irritate the skin. Avoiding heavy sun exposure is key since the new skin will be temporarily more prone to sun damage. Proper sunscreen is vital.

The treated area remains pinkish or reddish for several months. As the area begins to heal, changes in skin appearance and texture become evident. The results of CO2 laser resurfacing usually last for years.

How Much Does CO2 Laser Resurfacing Cost in New York?

The cost of CO2 Laser Resurfacing in New York is dependent on several factors. CO2 laser resurfacing cost is based on the issues being treated, anesthesia costs, and other factors.
